Caring for your handwoven piece
A well-cared-for handwoven textile lasts decades — often outliving machine-made fabric by generations. Here is how to keep yours at its best.
-
Cotton handwovens
First wash: gentle hand wash in cold water, separately.
Detergent: mild, enzyme-free. Avoid bleach entirely.
Drying: do not wring. Gently press water out and dry flat in shade. Avoid direct sunlight — it fades natural dyes over time.
Ironing: medium heat, reverse side.Use a pressing cloth for extra protection.
Storage: fold along the original fold lines in muslin cloth. Avoid plastic covers — fabric needs to breathe.
-
Silk & silk-cotton handwovens
First wash: dry clean recommended for pure silk pieces.
If hand washing: use cold water only, with a specialist silk detergent. Do not soak for more than 5 minutes.
Drying: lay flat on a clean towel in shade. Never hang silk to dry —it distorts the weave.
Ironing: low heat only, reverse side, with a pressing cloth. Never iron directly on silk.
Storage: fold in acid-free tissue or muslin. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
Storing your handwovens long-term
-
Air them out
Unfold and air your handwovens in shade every 3–4 months. This prevents moisture build up and keeps the fibres fresh.
-
Natural repellents
Use neem leaves or cedar block sinstead of naphthalene balls —chemicals in mothballs can damage natural fibres over time.
-
Avoid compression
Do not stack heavy items on top of stored handwovens. Prolonged compression flattens the weave structure permanently.
